There are three vehicles that are the cornerstone of Toyota’s high-performance motorsport lineup. The GR86, the GR Supra, and the GR Corolla. You may be wondering, however, what the “GR” in those three names means. Well, it stands for passion, precision, and fine-tuned engineering. The Toyota Racing Team

The story of the GR lineup starts with Toyota President Akio Toyoda. When he was still a senior VP, and heir to the company, back in the 2000’s, he had a burning passion for motorsports, and wanted to create a racing team of Toyota employees. Using the company’s impressive engineering acumen, they were able to start work on creating Toyota vehicles which could compete in some of the most grueling and challenging races.

GAZOO Racing

When they were coming up with a name for the team, they used a portmanteau of the Japanese words for picture and garage  – and the name GAZOO was born. Originally just designing race cars, when Akio Toyoda took over the company, the team was given the freedom to take all they’d learned fine tuning championship motorsport vehicles and use that knowledge to create high-performance cars for their customers.
