For over three decades the Toyota Camry has been leading the way in vehicular function, style, and innovation. Entering the market as a compact car, the Camry transitioned into a midsize automobile to meet the global demand for a wide-body Toyota sedan in 1991. The last 15 years have been an especially defining time for the Camry, owning the title of best selling car in America nearly every year since 2000. Earlier this year, Toyota redesigned their iconic car to rave reviews. The sweeping redesign gave the Camry a sportier look and feel with enhanced safety, performance, and efficiency. The result? The Camry once again claimed six straight months as the the best selling car in its category within Canada and the U.S.. As we enter 2016 Toyota looks to extend its dominance in the midsize sedan market with its LE, SE, Special Edition, XSE and XLE trim versions. Read further to find out what you'll love about the new Camry.
The 2015 redesign was very noticeable on the surface, immediately enhancing "curb appeal" whether parked or on the road. The grille was given a wider, more aggressive yet sleek look akin to the Avalon or Lexus. In fact, the whole vehicle was given a more sculpted sophisticated makeover. Praises from experts and owners alike allowed Toyota to carry over the same exterior design for 2016. The base LE drives on 16-inch steel wheels, the SE and XLE have 17-inch alloy wheels, and the XSE has 18-inch wheels.
The new SE is the sportiest of the lot and with a trunk-mounted rear lip spoiler, while the V6 XLE and XSE receive standard exterior upgrades that include LED running lights and a sunroof. The XSE also features projector-styled halogen headlamps. All have taillights that are connected by a new chrome bar running across the trunk, a nice touch that makes tailgaters take notice. The 2016 exterior additions are small ones that put the final brush stroke on the prior year's canvas. What this season does do is prove Toyota's commitment to taking feedback from drivers and giving them the car they demand, even when it bears repeating.
The base LE is upholstered with exquisite cloth fabric that is brought together with fine interior design in mind. The SE receives a combination of cloth and synthetic leather upholstery in addition to a three-spoke leather-trimmed steering wheel. The XSE steps it up by upholstering in leather and synthetic suede while the XLE is exclusively outfitted in full leather. The modern dash speaks to the times, with a futuristic look that draws the eye forward to the blue illuminated display. All of this can be enjoyed from the comforts of the expansive cabin with plenty of knee and legroom to make passengers feel at home. Noise and vibration levels are minimized to set the tone for a comfortable ride for the driver and companions alike.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has given the 2016 Camry an Overall 5-star (of 5) rating. The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) has given the car the highest possible rating for side impact, moderate/small-overlap frontal impact, roof-strength, and restraint/seatbelt testing. This is the result of the vehicle coming standard with antilock disc brakes, stability/traction control, full-length side curtain airbags, front and rear side airbags, front knee airbags and a camera in the rearview. Optional on the XSE and XLE is blind-spot monitoring, a rear cross-traffic alert system, pre-collision and lane-departure warnings, adaptive cruise control, an enhanced braking system and automatic high-beam headlight control. The XLE also carries the option of Toyota's Safety Connect emergency telematics system.
All 2015-16 Toyota Camry's are built with front-wheel drive, 6-speed automatic transmission, and a 2.5 L 4-cylinder engine which delivers 178 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque. The XSE and XLE versions offer a 3.5 L V6 with 268 hp and 248 lb-ft of torque. Fuel economy on the 4-cylinder engine is EPA-estimated at a combined 28 mpg while the V6 comes in at an impressive combined 25 mpg.
Toyota's reputation for delivering top level technology within their redesigned vehicles shined in 2015 as the Camry received an auto-infotainment overhaul. A 6.1 inch screen interface opens up your world to Bluetooth smartphone and audio connectivity, a six-speaker JBL sound system (with/CD player), an auxiliary audio jack, voice controls, Siri Eyes Free (for iPhone), and a USB/iPod interface. A 7-inch touchscreen, satellite radio and HD radio is optional on the LE and SE models. The XLE V6 and XSE V6 models add premium navigation technology.
While the 2016 Camry carries over its success from the 2015 model without veering from the course, the biggest change for 2016 is found with the SE Special Edition. For starters, the Special Edition simply looks impressive. This Camry variant sits on 18-inch wheels, is capped with a standard sunroof, and is accented to great effect with smoked (blacked-out/tinted) taillights.
As far as convenient functions are concerned, the Special Edition has keyless entry (trunk included) and ignition in addition to wireless smartphone charging - a big bonus for those of you that need to stay connected at all times. Like the LE and base SE, the Special Edition receives a 7-inch touchscreen and adds integrated SiriusXM Satellite Radio. All of this is brought together on the interior with subtle touches, such as blue on black contrast stitching, and floor mats that carry the Special Edition logo - an element that you and your Camry will wear with pride.
